The Finnish Sauna: Origin and Benefits

The sauna originates from Finland. This northern tradition dates back over 2,000 years. Originally, the sauna was a small cabin built even before the house itself. Today, in Finland, saunas are found everywhere—in homes, hotels, and even businesses.
Its benefits are numerous: it soothes the nerves, helps relieve stress, and releases muscle tension. From a medical standpoint, many studies have shown the sauna’s positive effects on the heart, blood circulation, and skin.

How to use a sauna?

The sauna is traditionally used naked, with a towel wrapped around the waist. Wearing clothes—even those designed to wick sweat—is unnecessary and even strongly discouraged. Also, remember to remove necklaces, bracelets, and other accessories, as the intense heat will not only make you sweat but can also heat up these items and cause burns.
Avoid bringing books or newspapers into the sauna as well—the ink vapors released by the heat could be toxic.
After 10 to 15 minutes, step out and take a cool shower. Finns roll in the snow, but if you don’t have a snowbank nearby, a cold shower will do just fine. The first time (don’t worry—it’s almost impossible), it might feel overwhelming. But as you repeat the experience, you’ll get used to it, and the cold rinse will even become enjoyable.
After this refreshing pause, go back into the sauna and try to repeat the same cycle two more times, for a total session of about 30 to 45 minutes. Fill the bucket provided with water, and from time to time, pour a ladle over the lava stones—you’ll instantly feel a wave of heat, which is surprisingly pleasant.

Installing your sauna

Our saunas are designed to be self-supporting, meaning they require no fixation to the floor or walls. You have several installation options:
• On an existing deck, provided it is recent or reinforced—always check that the structure can support the sauna’s weight.
• On prepared ground, such as a lawn, using geotextile + sand + gravel.
• On a concrete slab.
• On pavers or other stable materials.
Feel free to ask us for advice if you’re unsure about the best location.

Electrical connection

The sauna must be connected via a direct power cable running from the electrical panel to the sauna, protected by a 30mA residual current circuit breaker and a 32A individual breaker. A sauna stove must never be plugged into a standard outlet!
Use an RO2V cable with a cross-section of 3×6 mm² for single-phase or 5×6 mm² for three-phase. Allow for 1 meter of slack at the sauna’s location. We will connect this cable to a waterproof junction box mounted at the back or side of the sauna.
The stove is then connected to this box using a sauna-compliant cable (H07 RNF), which has a rubber sheath—not PVC or PE. The electrical connection can be made in single-phase or three-phase, but must be carried out by a qualified electrician or competent professional.

Our sauna models

The Roc Sauna

This is our very first outdoor sauna, developed over 10 years ago. Its distinctive shape offers an incredibly spacious interior. Its construction requires special care, as the profile is made from two different radii, which means machining must be done in several stages.
Its clean yet functional design fits perfectly into more “square” environments—next to a stone house, along a lap pool, or inside a rectangular room. Two or three large cradles keep it securely anchored to the ground. It can be heated with wood or electricity.
We now offer 3 versions:
• ROC 1: the perfect size to fit under a roof overhang or in a small space. Wood-fired heating not available for this model.
• ROC 2: our best-selling model, as it can be heated with either wood or electricity. Its size is ideal for most uses.
• ROC 3: this model is designed for group or commercial use (hotels, guesthouses, campsites, etc.).

The Moon Sauna

This is the latest addition to our range, and the model is protected by the INPI. Its body is the same as the BARREL model, but we’ve modified the rear façade by adding a tempered double-glazed half-moon window (4/16/4 clear glass). This brings in natural light and allows you to enjoy the outdoor view, while positioning the stove at the back of the cabin.
The Barrel Sauna
This rounded shape is very popular in Scandinavia and North America, and is now steadily making its way into our regions. The exterior diameter is 185 cm. We offer it in two lengths: 200 cm and 240 cm. A must-try experience.

The Bubble Sauna

The design of this round sauna was invented by Canadian craftsman Dave Byers in 2005. The bubble is tinted throughout and heat-treated to relieve the stress created during molding. We install a hemispherical bench inside the bubble, creating a pleasant floating sensation. The electric stove is placed on the left or right, and in the center if it’s a wood-fired version.

Maintaining your sauna

To maximize the lifespan of your sauna, there are a few essential steps to repeat after each session. Regular maintenance is indeed necessary. Western Red Cedar is a wood highly resistant to the elements. You can leave it untreated, or apply a clear oil, such as a saturator, to make it more water-repellent and UV-resistant.
Here are the maintenance steps we recommend after each indoor sauna session:
• Always leave the water bucket filled inside the sauna.
• Clean the benches and walls using a sponge soaked in hot water.
• Occasionally scrub gently in areas where stains are more stubborn (corners, etc.).
• If the floor is fitted with slatted panels, lift them vertically to let them dry.
• Once the sauna has cooled down, mop the floor to remove residues such as salts (from perspiration) and dead skin cells.
• Always place a clean towel on the benches.

Lifespan and warranty

With regular maintenance, a sauna can last at least twenty years. The wood must be able to breathe and should not be in direct contact with the ground (except for the base under the sauna). Here are our warranties:
• 304L stainless steel bands, made in France: 10-year warranty
• Woodwork: 5-year warranty against structural and manufacturing defects
• Tylo stoves: 2-year manufacturer’s warranty
